Tour of America

Boonen Winning in America

So I think the Tour of America is becoming a much more viable idea.  Why does America need a race like the Tour de France?  Races such as this are HUGE boosts for Tourism.  In its first year of exsistence the Tour of California gathered record crowds of 1.3 million spectators and the economic impact of the Tour of California is estimated to be at $100 million.  The Tour de Georgia has an estimated $26 million economic impact for the week long race.  Meanwhile the Tour de France attracts 2 billion television viewers worldwide.

All of this points to the idea that the Tour of America could be a success, and now that the race has been toned down to a 21 stage, 2200 mile race it is looking like a reality.  The race hopes to attract a national audience of 25-30 million fans.

I have to say that I am excited and looking at the Vuelta which continues to try to find new ways to draw in fan interest.  Well, maybe the Tour of America will become the 3rd Grand Tour.  It’s always a possibility!

Our Way

We can simply be like the rest,

get our degree, find a nice girl

and settle down.

Or we can rise, like Icarus.

Become the legend of our time.

Rise and strike fear into our peers.

Rise above our own stature,

to new heights.

Race through the streets, and

as our legs spin elegantly in circles, faster and faster.

The crowd will draw back in awe.

Whispering to each other,

amazed at the graceful power.

They will remember as if in dream

of our passage through their streets

on our way to new heights.

England Takes Biggest Win of Career!

Richard England (Bissell) took the biggest win of his career today in Stage 5 of the Tour de Georgia.  This is also one of the biggest wins for his team Bissell.  Todays stage was the first in which the pure sprinters would be likely to lose some time to the other riders.

In a surprisingly deceptive finish England was able to hold of Rory Sutherland (Health Net) and George Hincapie (High Road) for the win.  After the last corner there was a slight downhill before the line that allowed England to hold his advantage to the line.
